When to Start Planning a Mitzvah

“When should we start planning?” Every family asks me this, and they always look a little surprised by my answer: whenever you’re ready.

There’s no magic number. You’ll read online that you need a year, or eighteen months, or that you should have booked everything the day your child was born. That’s not how I work. I can plan a beautiful mitzvah whether you come to me with two years or a few months. That’s the whole point of working with me.

What time actually gives you is options. The earlier you start, the more dates, venues and vendors are still open, so you get more to choose from. But more time doesn’t mean a better event. An experienced planner knows what needs to happen first, who to call and how to get it done in whatever time you have.

So if you’re reading this and panicking because a friend told you you’re already late, take a breath. You’re not late.

There’s no wrong time to start planning a mitzvah. There’s only the time you have, and I plan around it.

What matters is starting with the right things. Your date with the synagogue, your child’s learning and your budget come first, and I wrote a whole post about how to start. After that, the order of everything else depends on your timeline, and that part is my job, not yours.

If you have a lot of time, great. We’ll use it to find exactly the right venue and team. If you don’t, that’s fine too. We’ll move quickly and make smart decisions, and your child will still have a celebration that feels completely like them.
