How to Pick Your Wedding Dress

Los Angeles Wedding Planner - How to Pick Your Wedding Dress 3

Choosing your wedding dress is serious business. If you’re like me, you’ve seen in all the wedding movies that epic moment when the main character finds “the one.” The lights get brighter, the music sweeter, and the joy is unreal! It’s a magical moment for sure, but it can be a process getting there.

To help you get to have that magic, movie-worthy moment of your own, I have a few helpful tips!

Set Your Budget/Research Prices

Wedding gowns can get expensive quickly. If you’re working with a set budget for your wedding, think this through beforehand. Make sure to include alteration costs into that, as it’s easy to forget about that. Knowing what you’re willing to spend will help you know your options.

If you’re including jewelry, shoes, and your veil into the same “fashion” budget factor that in. Veils & wedding shoes are not cheap!

Don’t Try on What You Can’t Afford

You know what you can afford by now, and you need to stick to that number. Start with a cheaper bridal store that you know fits in your budget. From there, work your way up. If you end up in a pricier store, don’t try on a dress outside your budget. That will only lead to heartbreak. Your wedding dress doesn’t have to put you into debt.

Go in With No Expectations

It’s easier said than done. You’ve possibly dreamed of a specific wedding dress style. Going into it though, be willing to try everything on. It may shock you what you love, what you don’t and what you look best in.

Prepare Your Mind

Wedding dress sizes are very different than normal clothing. Know before you go trying on dresses that you’ll likely be 2-3 sizes up from your normal size. Knowing this beforehand can help you get in the right mindset. Also, remember you don’t have to tell a soul your size besides your seamstress & sales person!

Start Shopping Early

Wedding dress production & alterations can take months. Especially if you want to customize it or make any changes, it takes time. Start shopping as soon as you’re able to give yourself time.

Pack the Right Basics

Nude colors & strapless bras will be your best friend. Having your neon, patterned panties show through a dress can be really distracting. Also, if you’re planning to wear Spanx on your wedding day, go ahead and bring them with for a realistic look.

The same goes for shoes. If you’re planning on wearing heels bring a similar heel to try on dresses with. If you’re wearing flats, bring flats. This will give you a real idea of what length dress you will need to buy.

Make Sure You Know It’s “the One”

Don’t feel pressured to buy a dress the day you try it on. You can absolutely sleep on the decision or even try a couple more on just to make sure. This is a big investment you want to get right. Don’t let anyone push you to buy before you’re ready.

Bust a Move

You can find the most gorgeous dress, but if you can’t move in it or sit, you may grow to hate it. Functionality is important if you’re planning on dancing the night away or kneeling for prayer during your church ceremony. Try sitting, dancing, and moving around in each dress to see if it really works for you!

Go Big(er)

Literally, I recommend going bigger rather than smaller when you order your gown if you’re torn between sizes. Your alterations people can easily take in a dress that is too big. It’s infinitely more expensive to try to make your dress bigger later.
